Flamingos are found mainly near estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes in tropical and subtropical areas. They are not born pink but turn reddish-pink in colour from special colouring pigments found in the algae and invertebrates they consume.

Generally, non-migratory birds, travel when their colonies turn temporary due to changes in climate and water levels in their breeding areas.

According to experts, the number of birds visiting the wetlands of Mumbai has increased over the years.
